10 tips for envelope selection and use1.) The envelope is the most important element of the mailing package. When you begin designing the package, start with the envelope. 2.) Choose an envelope size that will accomodate all inserts. Design inserts 1/4” smaller than the envelope on both sides and the top.
3.) Choose an envelope type that can be machine inserted. Hand inserting costs more and takes longer to complete. 4.) Choose an envelope size that qualifies for postal automation...or at least know how much extra postage your special envelope will cost to mail. 5.) Design the envelope for eye flow. As a rule the recipient will first look at their name and address, then the teaser copy, then the corner card for return address and finially the postage corner. 6.) The sole purpose of the envelope teaser copy is to get the envelope opened. The best location is to the left and slightly above the recipients address. 7.) If you’re considering a special-made envelope with a custom window or unusual size, plan way ahead. The special envelope will take longer to produce than the inserts. 8.) If using a postal endoresment like ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED, print it so it is pominent. It tells the recipient you consider his name and address important. Make them feel important and the envelope will get opened. 9.) Try unusual indicia designs, metered postage or live stamps. They will all increase response. 10.) Order extra envelopes. There will be some spoilage for inserter and inkjetting setups. The industry standard is 5-10%. The extra cost is minimal compared to reprinting because you ran short. |
